What is the purpose of this year's Annual Summit topic?
- In response to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's quote: "California is blessed with vast resources... we rededicate ourselves to making California cleaner, greener and more prosperous," the Desert Lyceum is interested in learning how Coachella Valley will respond to this challenge and make our community cleaner, greener, and more prosperous.
Who is coming to the 2008 Summit?
- Leaders in government, education and the private sector who must make decisions and form policy to benefit citizens of the region.
- Entrepreneurs and investors considering business creation in the clean energy sector.
- Private citizens who want to discover how to make a difference in the Coachella Valley and to learn what the future holds.
What does the Summit program look like?
- The 2008 Summit features keynote speakers, informative break-out sessions and dynamic dialog with an emphasis on open interaction among all the participants to find energy solutions and create pathways for job creation and economic growth in the new eco-economy.
- The afternoon features a unique interactive session, called a Socratic Dialog. Since a fundamental tenet of the Lyceum is dialogue and debate, the Socratic Dialog session is designed to be a moderated debate with all speakers on panel. It will also be opened up to the public to ask questions of various panel members.
Who will be speaking at the Summit?
- The Summit keynote speakers are Anthony Brunello, California Deputy Secretary for Climate Change and Energy, and Michael Peevey, President of the California Public Utilities Commission. For a complete list of speakers please click here.
What is Desert Lyceum?
- The Desert Lyceum was organized in the spring 2007 by the University of California, Riverside (UCR) Palm Desert Graduate Center as a non-partisan leadership group dedicated to exploring issues of consequence to the future of the Coachella Valley.
- The Desert Lyceum is co-chaired by Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson and Carolyn Stark, UCR Assistant Executive Vice Chancellor and Executive Director of the UCR Palm Desert Graduate Center.
What is the purpose of the Desert Lyceum?
- The purpose of the Desert Lyceum is to explore issues of consequence to the future of the Coachella Valley and act as a catalyst to bring together diverse opinions and expertise to focus on regional issues related to quality of life, economic growth and balanced sustainability for the future of the Coachella Valley.
- The Desert Lyceum members focus on one macro issue each year and their activities culminate in an annual summit in April.
