The Desert LYCEUM 2008 Summit on April 25, 2008 will be a comprehensive one day public summit of regional leaders to advance energy efficiency and create pathways for job growth in the new economy.

Why Sponsor the Desert LYCEUM 2008 Summit?

The rising cost of energy has accelerated the drive for efficiency, and spurred on the next wave of innovation and investment in alternatives. Governor Schwarzenegger has asked the state to "lead by example." His goal is to make government a model of ingenuity and Innovation that will inspire and encourage the public and private sectors and all of California's 30 million citizens to pursue sustainability.

Sponsors of the Desert LYCEUM 2008 Summit will demonstrate leadership by sponsoring regional dialogue on the best approach to sustainability and energy efficiency, and open avenues to explore the opportunity for economic expansion of this industry sector in the Coachella Valley.

Who Will Be Coming to the Desert LYCEUM 2008 Summit:

  • Leaders in government, education, and the private sector who must make decisions and form policy to benefit citizens of the region
  • Entrepreneurs and investors considering business creation in the clean energy sector
  • Expected attendance will be 300-600 for the one-day summit
  • The registration fee for participants is $110 per person with an early-registration fee before April 11 of $95 per person

Format of the Desert LYCEUM Public Summit:

The Summit will emphasize interaction among participants and speakers since a fundamental tenet of the LYCEUM is dialogue and debate. Following a morning of concurrent breakout sessions run by Summit partners (the Desert Chapter of the Building Industry Association, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, and the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership), participants will engage in a Socratic Dialogue designed to examine all sides of the Issues. The Socratic Dialogue will feature a moderator and debate among nine panelists selected from the morning speakers and concluding with facilitated interaction with the audience and the panelists. At the end of the day, a reception will allow participants to visit the exhibitor area and interact with each other on a more informal basis.

About the Desert LYCEUM:

The purpose of the Desert LYCEUM is to explore issues of consequence to the future of the Coachella Valley and act as a catalyst to bring together diverse opinions and expertise to focus on regional issues related to quality of life, economic growth, and balanced sustainability for the future of the Coachella Valley.

The Desert LYCEUM is organized by the University of California, Riverside (UCR) as a private forum in the Coachella Valley and co-chaired by Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson and UCR Assistant Executive Vice Chancellor Carolyn Stark. The Desert Lyceum has been meeting once a month since May, 2007 when it was formed as a non-partisan leadership group. A year of study culminates in the public forum that this year focuses on energy, sustainability, and economic opportunity.
